At sixteen, suicidal and weighing almost 200 lbs, Katherine Jansen-Byrkit was far from living wakefully.  The journey of waking up began with a failed suicide attempt and the long, hard passage between despair and hope.  Healing from the inside out, she uses the same idea as a framework for her book, River to Ocean:  Living in the Flow of Wakefulness.  Katherine starts with the inner world and moves to the outer, providing insights, practices and inspirational stories as she explores 10 aspects of wakefulness.

River to Ocean:  Living in the Flow of Wakefulness reflects the human voyage of finding our way to an awakened self. As with a river traversing steep mountains and winding valleys, our inner and outer worlds can be encumbered by old beliefs, preoccupation with death or compromised relationships to others, all of which can interfere with living wakefully.  In her work, Katherine suggests another possibility: to wake up through our human life, not in spite of it.

We, like a river traveling towards the sea, are intrinsically connected to that which we move towards;   a vastness that we both are and to which we eventually return. In discovering our awakened self, we access the current that connects us to that vastness.   River to Ocean:  Living in the Flow of Wakefulness serves as a river guide, helping us find our own flow as we navigate the waters of our humanity.

“The river delights to lift us free, if only we dare to go.  Our true work is this voyage, this adventure.
